If you’ve only ever packed for a commercial flight, you’re probably used to worrying about carry-on size limits, checked bag fees, and overhead bin space. But packing for a private jet is different, and most of the rules you’re used to don’t apply the same way.
Some things are more flexible, but there are a couple of things that are actually more restrictive than people expect. Here’s what to sort out ahead of time so you can show up and enjoy every minute of your trip!
What Size Aircraft Are You Flying On?
The first thing to understand when figuring out how to pack for a private jet is that luggage capacity depends almost entirely on which aircraft you’re flying. Private aircraft have weight limits that account for passengers, fuel, and baggage together, and that equation looks different depending on the size of the jet.
Light jets have more limited baggage space. The compartments are smaller, and if you’re flying with a full cabin of six or seven passengers, that adds up quickly. A mid-size or heavy jet gives you a lot more flexibility, but even then it’s worth knowing what you’re working with before you show up with oversized bags.
One of the most useful private jet packing tips we can offer is to let us know about your group size and any gear when you book, including:
- Golf clubs, ski equipment, or other oversized sporting gear
- Large checked-style luggage for multiple passengers
- Musical instruments or fragile items that need special handling
- Camera equipment, medical equipment, or other heavy gear
- Pets traveling with you (more on that below)
When you book a private flight with Lane Aviation, we can tell you exactly what the aircraft can accommodate so there are no surprises at the ramp.
How Private Jet Packing Is Different from Commercial Travel
Commercial |
Private Charter |
|
|---|---|---|
| Liquid restrictions | 3-oz rule applies | No restrictions |
| Laptop at security | Must be removed | Not required |
| Shoes at security | Must be removed | Not required |
| Bag size limits | Strict carry-on rules | No overhead bin limits |
| Checked bag fees | Yes | No |
| Gate bag check | Possible if flight is full | Never |
| Pets | Crate required, restrictions apply | No crate, no restrictions |
What to Bring on a Private Jet: ID and Documentation
Private jet travel still requires valid identification, including Real ID, just like a commercial flight. Make sure your driver’s license or ID is Real ID compliant before your departure date. If it’s not, a valid passport works just fine.
If you’re flying into Reagan National Airport (DCA), there’s an additional security screening process through Lane Aviation’s DCA Gateway certification. Our team handles all of that coordination, but it’s worth knowing going in that DCA has specific requirements that other airports don’t.
Things Your Charter Team Will Want to Know
Beyond knowing what to bring on a private jet, there are a couple of details worth flagging with our team before you fly.
- If you have specific food or drink preferences, let us know ahead of time—we can coordinate catering so everything is ready when you board.
- If you’re traveling with a pet, it’s worth mentioning when you book. Policies vary by aircraft operator, so giving us a heads up means we can make sure the aircraft we source for your trip is a good fit. In our experience, it’s rarely an issue, but it’s easier to sort out before you arrive than after.
The Perks of Flying Private
If you’ve never flown charter before, the packing experience tends to be much simpler and less stressful:
- No security lines or TSA checkpoints
- No boarding groups or gate delays
- No overhead bin limits or last-minute bag checks
- No checked bag fees
- No need to arrive two hours early (you show up closer to departure)
- Private parking and direct ramp access
You pull up, your bags go on the plane, and you board—ready for takeoff!
